The DDA is on a mission to increase the tree canopy in Downtown! Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, it also provides shade and actually reduces the temperature of the area it covers.
It takes years to reach the tree size and canopy of the much loved Las Olas Shoppes corridor (shown at the upper right). So, we need to start now!
The program consists of the DDA partnering with
property owners to remove non-shade trees (such as
palm trees) and replace them with shade trees (such
as Live Oaks). Shown below is the first project, where
the DDA will partner with the owners of 350 and 450
Las Olas to remove their date palms (shown on the
right side of the photo) with Live Oaks.
The DDA also plans to place new shade trees in public
Right of Ways, to include existing medians.
