Stop by the Huizenga Plaza (park at the corner of Las Olas and Andrews) for a very unique experience, a part of Dan Corson's portfolio, an international lighting artist based out of Seattle, Washington. This extraordinary public-private partnership consisting of Broward County, the City of Fort Lauderdale, the DDA, and the Florida Power & Light Company is a permanent installation for all to enjoy!
It all started in 2005 when the Broward County Cultural Division solicited for a light artist to do an installation in Broward County to celebrate 30 years of public art and design. Simultaneously, the DDA was exploring lighting options as a way for security in its 1.8 acre park. Soon enough the two project objectives were solved by this unique presentation.
The 3-tiered system has a LASER that projects onto the lawn, the first of its kind in the United States. Being called Emerald Laser Lawn, the laser displays a variety of shapes and movements, each triggered by a nearby motion sensor. Luminious Conjunctions entails both the second and third component of the project. The second component is white uplighting in each of the 34 live oak trees that individually changes to green as someone walks past the tree (also triggered by motion sensors in each of the trees). The third component consists of 5 medallion zones located strategically throughout the park that when triggered, produce preprogrammed sequences of the 34 trees (the trees dance in unison with an array of color concepts).
