Fort Lauderdale’s higher education landscape is reaching new heights, with institutions across Broward County advancing bold visions, expanding enrollment, and driving significant economic impact. At the center of this momentum are Broward College, Nova Southeastern University, and Florida Atlantic University, each helping position the region as a hub for talent, research, and innovation.

On the Rise: Broward’s Higher Ed Momentum

Broward College plays a critical role in developing job-ready talent. Recently named one of just 200 institutions eligible for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the college is doubling down on outcomes. As President Torey Alston shared with the Sun-Sentinel, several programs, including dental hygiene, respiratory care, vision care, and the police academy, achieved 100% first-time pass rates on licensing exams.

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) continues to distinguish itself as a research powerhouse, earning designation as a Carnegie R1 university, placing it among fewer than 5% of institutions nationwide for the highest level of research activity. With an economic impact of more than $7 billion, NSU is the largest private research university in Florida. A national leader in health education, NSU graduates the most physicians in Florida and produces more doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and optometrists than any university in the country.

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) continues its rapid ascent among the nation’s leading public institutions. As President Adam Hasner notes, “Florida Atlantic University is on the ascent,” with a vision to enhance its reputation and serve as “a vital partner to the Sunshine State’s long-term prosperity.” Now both an R1 and a Top 100 public university, FAU is increasingly a top choice for South Florida students.

Transforming Fort Lauderdale Into a Leading Research Hub for the Blue Economy

Amid population growth, rising demand for housing, and the attraction of families, Fort Lauderdale’s urban core is separating itself from its peers, demonstrating the stability that supports sustained, long-term growth.

Both Nova Southeastern University and Florida Atlantic University are emerging as national leaders in advancing the blue economy, demonstrating why Fort Lauderdale is truly Fueled by Water. FAU is home to the State of Florida’s Office of the Ocean Economy, an initiative designed to strengthen and grow the state’s ocean and coastal industries, which collectively generate an economic impact of more than $100 billion annually.

At NSU, momentum is building under the leadership of President Harry K. Moon. Through world-class programs and facilities, including its nationally recognized oceanographic center overlooking Port Everglades, NSU is advancing critical work in coral reef restoration, marine conservation, and sustainable ocean industries.

This research not only protects vital ecosystems but also fuels innovation, supports new technologies, and helps create emerging industries rooted right here in Fort Lauderdale. Dr. Moon believes NSU can become pre-eminent in Florida’s “blue economy” and earn the distinction of being the “Woods Hole of Florida,” comparable to the world-renowned oceanographic institution in Massachusetts.

Together, these institutions are not only shaping the future workforce but also reinforcing Fort Lauderdale’s position as a dynamic center for higher education, innovation, and economic growth.
